New Thought Leadership by PM Solutions Experts

We’re excited to announce the publication of the Fifth Edition of the American Management Association Handbook of Project Management! Our own editor-in-chief, Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin, serves as co-editor, with PMI Fellow Paul C. Dinsmore, PMP, of this classic text.

The AMA Handbook, now published by HarperCollins Leadership, provides a comprehensive view of the project management discipline, beginning with the processes and knowledge areas defined by PMI’s PMBOK Guide, Sixth Edition, and then expanding on the basics to include the topics that practitioners encounter throughout their careers. Sections of the book cover the role of the project manager, emerging trends and practice areas, organizational issues in PM and how the discipline applies to various application areas, such as financial services, healthcare, and construction (among others).

Over the course of the past four editions, spanning nearly 18 years, Jeannette has often called on PM Solutions associates to contribute writings to the Handbook updates, in their areas of specialty. As she says, “Although the Handbook is not a PM Solutions project (I edit it as a freelancer), when I am tasked with finding ‘project management experts’ to cover new or existing topics, I turn to people whose work I know and trust: my PM Solutions colleagues.” Contributors receive complimentary copies and the opportunity to win publishing credits toward their PMP credentials, but are otherwise unpaid. “It truly shows how much people care about the discipline that they are willing to share their time and expertise by publishing chapters in the Handbook,” says Jeannette.

So, we are justifiably proud of our firm’s contributions to the current edition:

• Jeannette Cabanis-Brewin contributes a new chapter on the role of project management in strategy execution
• Deborah Bigelow-Crawford contributes a new chapter on benefits realization
• J. Kent Crawford updates his chapters on the PMO and career pathing
• And consultant Gary Alvord co-authors the new chapter on Resource Management with Paul Dinsmore.

In addition, three of our contract instructors for PM College – Bill Athayde, Ruth Elswick and Paul Lombard (all also contributing authors to Project Management Essentials) – have chapters in Section One, which covers project management basics. Another half-dozen chapters are written by former consultants for the firm, with whom Jeannette has continued to maintain professional relationships.

These chapters are only a fraction of the new and updated information in the book. This edition boasts a new chapter on strategy implementation by the leaders of the Brightline Initiative along with new chapters on digital transformation, mergers and acquisitions, agile communications, and nonprofit management.
